The stress of determining what to bring on a trip or vacation is well-known. This packing pressure intensifies when you are away for an extended period or anticipate moving into a smaller living space. In recent years, van life or car camping has increased in popularity and been fueled by the trend of #vanlife on Instagram and TikTok. Although the popularized version of van life can be expensive, strategic planning makes solo road-tripping achievable. College students interested in traveling should consider a car camping trip because of its affordability compared to flights and hotel stays. The following guide presents the essential items required for a month-long solo road trip to facilitate your future adventures and alleviate the anxiety associated with packing.

The following list outlines the necessities for a month-long solo adventure:

1. One pair of sandals

Choose sandals suitable for various terrains and quick drying. Sandals are a fantastic option for road trips because they are comfortable driving shoes, and their versatility will ensure you are prepared for any activity.

2.One pair of casual shoes

Converse high tops or a similar option for mild days when sandals are insufficient will make off days or events more comfortable.

3. One pair of athletic sneakers

Bring one pair of athletic sneakers suitable for hiking or extended walks.

4. A winter coat and beanie

Essential for journeys out West, where temperatures can drop, especially at higher elevations. Review annual average temperatures in the region you plan to visit and confirm that your gear is rated for the range.

5. A raincoat

A handy item to have, particularly in regions with frequent rainfall. A raincoat is advisable over an umbrella because it can be more compact and does not impede any experiences by gobbling a free hand.

6. A baseball cap and bandana

Protect your face from the sun with a cap. A bandana is another option for those more tolerant of the sun or to restrain hair while driving.

7. A sun shirt

Another essential for UV protection, especially if you have tattoos or sun sensitivity. A lightweight, long-sleeved sun shirt is most advisable.

8. Two sweaters or sweatshirts and a flannel

All versatile options for layering, two sweaters and one flannel should suffice, but feel free to fluctuate the number of flannels and sweaters depending on your preference and cold tolerance.

9. Two long-sleeve shirts or undershirts

Lightweight, long-sleeve shirts are another suitable option for layering.

10. Six T-shirts and three tank tops

Six T-shirts should be ample, as you can reuse T-shirts and tank tops multiple times.

11. Six pairs of pants

Include a mix of pants suitable for outdoor activities, such as jeans, sweatpants and pants designed for outdoor activities.

12. Five pairs of shorts

Cover various activities with a selection of shorts, including casual, athletic, and spandex options. Spandex shorts are an excellent option for driving on hot days.

13. Two pairs of leggings

Leggings are an excellent option for days inside, driving wear, or recreation if you enjoy them. Unless you wear leggings often, two pairs should suffice for a month-long trip because they can be re-worn multiple times before washing.

14. One bathing suit and undergarments

Essential items. Include a bathing suit for roadside showers or spontaneous swims on your packing list.

When curating your packing list, consider your destination, time of year, preferred activities, and tolerance for varying weather conditions. Adapt the list to suit your needs and ensure you have what is necessary without excess. A crucial aspect of living in a car is embracing a minimalist approach; only bring what is essential. Opt for items that can be layered and reused. While laundromats are an option, prioritizing other experiences will be more fulfilling. When you lay out your items for packing, you are already paving the way for a remarkable and well-prepared journey.
