The Paralympic Games have the ability to bring the world together once every two years. Athletes from all over the world come to one location to compete in the Olympic and Paralympic Games — aiming to bring home a medal for their country and earn a title as the best in their sport. Although all athletes on this endeavor are considered to be the best within their discipline, all still come together, supporting one another to make it to the top.

Fashion also brings the community together, much like sport. Clothing can tell a story, share culture, explain experiences — it all has a deeper meaning that brings a broader sense of community to light. The Paralympic Games are no exception to fashion’s impact. Brands like Skims, Ralph Lauren, and Nike all come together to decorate athletes in a way that best represents what it means to be on Team USA.

The Paralympic Games historically started in 1960, taking place in Rome, Italy, to support people who have a disability and are classified under their sport organization. The games support the best Para athletes in their class who take extraordinary measures to perfect themselves in their sport.

The Paralympic Opening Ceremony this year took place in Milan on March 6. Performers from all around the world, with and without disabilities, came to put on a show to welcome the thousands of athletes and spectators worldwide. This event not only brings out the competitive atmosphere of athletics, but also the competitive atmosphere of outfits. The Paralympic Opening Ceremony brought the culture, history, and spectacle of Italy.

Italy’s long-celebrated hub of global art and fashion has become a vibrant backdrop for athletes who redefine style, strength, and visibility. The Milan opening ceremony was not only a display of athletic excellence but also a showcase of fashion’s power to tell a story. From flowing silhouettes inspired by Italian designers to performance wear crafted for both function and flair, the outfits highlighted the individuality of each athlete while reflecting the culture and artistry of the host nation.

American Para athlete Oksana Masters, who recently won her 20th Para medal, exemplifies the fusion of sport and style. The Para cross-country skier and biathlete — who began her career as a Para rower — sets a standard for success, proving that performance and personal expression can shine equally on and off the field. At the Milan Paralympic Opening Ceremony, Masters’outfits reflected her dynamic personality while honoring the elegance and craftsmanship of Italian design, turning every movement into a statement of both athleticism and fashion.

Brenna Huckaby, an American Para snowboarder and three-time gold medalist, is known for her vibrant style and fearless flair — her iconic purple hair is impossible to miss. At the ceremony, Huckaby’s bold fashion choices mirrored her playful personality, showing that style can be as powerful a form of self-expression as her performance on the slopes. Her outfits, designed to balance movement with show-stopping color and detail, celebrated individuality while embracing the artistry of Milan, reinforcing that the Opening Ceremony is as much about fashion as it is about sport.

Josh Pauls, Team USA’s Paralympic flag bearer, carried more than just the stars and stripes — he carried the spirit of the Games onto the Milan stage. Known for his achievements in sled hockey, Pauls’ presence at the Opening Ceremony was amplified by a striking outfit that combined bold colors, tailored designs, and subtle nods to Italian fashion, reflecting both his leadership and the artistry of the host city. Every detail, from fabric choice to accessory accents, highlighted how Paralympic athletes use fashion to make a statement, turning ceremonial moments into a showcase of style, strength, and identity.

While Team USA’s Paralympic athletes all wore coordinated Ralph Lauren uniforms for the Opening Ceremony, each individual brought their own personality and style to the look. From Oksana Masters’ dynamic elegance to Brenna Huckaby’s bold colors and iconic purple hair to Josh Pauls’ commanding presence as flag bearer, the athletes transformed the standard uniforms into statements of individuality. In Milan, the fusion of fashion, personal expression, and athletic excellence turned the Opening Ceremony into a celebration not just of sport, but of the unique spirit each athlete brings to the Milan-Cortina Paralympic Games.
