SENIOR COLUMN: MORE THAN A DEGREE

Athens has felt like a home away from home for as long as I can remember. Living and learning in Athens has shaped me in many ways I would have never expected, both personally and professionally. As a student in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, I have experienced what it truly means to become a storyteller. What once felt like a distant goal — obtaining my Master’s of Science in Journalism at Ohio University — has become one of the most defining chapters of my life.
Over the past year and a half, I have pushed myself in ways I didn’t think were possible. This program challenged me to think more critically, write more intensively, and work outside of my comfort zone. I have had the opportunity to explore new places, meet incredible people, and gain real-world experience that goes far beyond the classroom. Every moment has contributed to preparing me for what comes next, and I feel more confident than ever stepping into the professional world.
One of the most meaningful impacts of my journey has been my time with Thread Magazine. Thread has been more than just a publication to me. It has been a creative outlet, learning space, and community while completing my degree. Coming into this program after graduating from Ashland University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Fashion Merchandising and Marketing, I knew I wanted to find a way to combine my background in fashion with my passion for writing. Thread has given me that opportunity.
Through my work with the magazine, I have been able to write a wide range of articles and editorials that truly reflect who I am. Writing has always come naturally to me, but being a part of Thread has helped me refine that skill and turn it into something more purposeful. I have learned how to pitch ideas, meet deadlines, collaborate with a team, and adapt my voice depending on the story I am telling. Each article has made me a stronger and more confident journalist.
Beyond the work itself, the community I’ve found within Thread has meant everything to me. I have built relationships with people who inspire me, challenge me, and support me. Being surrounded by such a creative and driven group has made my experience even more special, and it is something I will carry with me forever.
When I look back on my work, there are a few projects that stand out. Writing for the upcoming “Metamorphosis” issue has been incredibly meaningful, as the theme of growth and change allows me to reflect on my journey throughout this program. I also loved contributing to “The Movement Issue” in the fall, which allowed me to explore storytelling in a more dynamic and expressive way. Both experiences pushed me creatively and helped me grow as a writer.
My online articles have allowed me to explore different sides of my personality and interests. From creating a fun and creative DIY Halloween costume article to writing about my passion for travel in the upcoming ‘Euro Summer’ piece, to highlighting the power and inspiration behind Paralympic athletes, each story is unique. I honestly don’t have a single favorite because every piece represents a different part of me and my growth.
At the heart of everything I write is my love for fashion. To me, fashion is more than clothing. It’s a form of storytelling, it reflects culture, captures history, allows people to express themselves, and much more. Being able to share that perspective through my writing has been one of the most rewarding parts of my experience.
As I prepare to graduate, I am incredibly thankful for everything my journey has given me. My time in Athens, at Scripps, and with Thread Magazine has shaped me into the person and journalist I am today. While it is bittersweet to move on, I know I am ready for what comes next, and I will always carry this experience with me.
